  1. The ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is an organization that has a mission making the world a better place for animals. It is particularly involved concerning animals that are pets or are wild animals being held in captivity. Here is a description of the organization as given on its website: "The ASPCA was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Our mission, as stated by our founder, Henry Bergh, in 1866, is 'to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.'" What they do is if someone sees another person abusing their pet they will call them. Then they will come, take the pet away and sue the owner. If you know someone who does this call the ASPCA and tell them what the persons name is, what kind of animal it is, where the abuse is happening, and your name. Please call if you do see an animal being abused it could save the life of a poor defenseless animal. Officers at the ASPCA headquarters in New York investigate more than 5,000 cruelty and neglect cases a year. They rescue more than 6,000 animals a year but that is just a rough estimate.

  2. Earth Justice started with a court case in 1972 to protect Mineral King valley from being developed, that technically failed in Supreme Court, but was told that they could try again in lower courts. Back then they were simply an offshoot from the Sierra Club. This group became invigorated beyond the members of their group and detached from the Sierra Club to found Earth Justice in 1997, which is the coolest name they could have chosen.
Other than having the coolest name out of any other environmental activist group, Earth Justice is an extremely prominent environmental law firm
(the largest in the world). Earth Justice's slogan is "Because the Earth needs a good lawyer" could not be more true. Earth Justice takes people that damage the environment to court and they score about 40 victories in court a year. As for their purpose: their main objective is to promote and preserve the planet and thus preserving natures beauties as well as human health. I support them because they seem like a genuine group that uses a specific skill set (a legal skill set) to preserve the environment and mankind. Is there a nobler cause?

  4. The objective of having Girl Scouts in the United States is to mold girls into women with character, confidence and courage. This program encourages young girls to have fun and work with other people. They go on field trips where they learn skill building, wildlife techniques, and cultural differences. Also the girls learn to give back to the community by doing community service projects. The reason why I support this organization is because it helps girls learn to be their individual self and see how much potential they really have if they just try. This organization provides these young girls with the skills they will need in life like relating with others, learning respect, and communication skills. With organizations like this, girls will learn to contribute to the improvement of society and be a great leader.

  5. Girl Scouts started in Georgia off of an instinct to get girls out of isolated homes and make use of the outdoors and spread community service. The goal is to build "girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place." It started in 1912 but wasn't incorporated until 1915. In the 1920's, Girl Scouts had troops worldwide. Today there is more than 3 million girl scouts! Girl Scouts have built a relationship with congress making it possible to address issues with girls at a national level. Girl Scouts is also an equal opportunity employer Committed to diversity. They offer all kinds of jobs that contribute to the organization and growth of Girl Scouts. They also have plenty benefits available along with their employment. Girl Scouts not only offers community service and a chance to get outdoors but also extra curricular activities and assistance with education. There is no limit to who can be a Girl Scout, they enjoy diversity and even have a troop for mentally challenged girls.

  6. Earthjustice, a non-profit law firm, specializes in cases whose goals protect the earth's natural resources, safeguard public health and promote clean energy. Based in San Francisco, Earthjustice has none regional offices across the United States. First founded as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund in 1971, their first case involved the protection of the Mineral King Valley in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains from becoming a ski resort. It has since been preserved and incorporated into Sequoia National Park thanks to their efforts. Another notable case is when Earhtjustice attorneys together with state governments and conservation groups forced the EPA to fight global warming in the 2006 Supreme Court case Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency, the first case of its kind. Its name was changed to Earthjustice back in '97 to better reflect its role as a legal advocate for not just the Sierra Club. Being a non-profit organization, they do not charge clients for their services and are funded rather by the donations of individuals and foundations and not by governments or corporations. I chose to work with Zach and Tobi when I saw that they were doing an organization on environmental protection. Earthjustice is an outstanding group that works in the courts, actually taking action which I respect. Instead of meaninglessly whining and just going after money, they are a group that looks to really care for the planet. -Roberto Rivera

  7. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund was founded in 1975. It is now the leading Hispanic higher education fund, and works to address the financial and cultural barriers that keep many Latino’s from earning a college degree. Over $335 million in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding people of Hispanic decent over the 36 years. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund “envisions a future where every Latino household will have at least one college graduate, creating and enduring impact on the college outlook of Latino families nationwide, strengthening the American economy for generations to come.”

Why do I want to support something like this? My being an African American, I believe this will create unity among our races if I support their program. I don’t believe there are enough of people supporting other races in America. We seem to just support our own race, which is wrong. Also this fund not only helps Latinos get into college, it helps minorities. Most Latino’s live in the same neighborhoods as African Americans, so seeing our Latino brothers and sisters make to college will boost the overall moral of the minority community in reference to college. So I see this as not only an opportunity, but an investment.

  8. Golisano Children's Hospital through the University of Rochester Medical Center is one of New York's premier children’s hospitals in research as well as care. The hospital has 124 beds, serving children under the age of 18 on a referral basis. They are extremely dedicated in helping any seriously ill child, no matter if the family cannot pay. The Golisano Children’s Fund aids the hospital in research as well as overall better care for its patients. The Hematology/Oncology Department at the Hospital works very closely with the organization, The Children’s Oncology Group, which raises money and conducts research in childhood cancers, and Neuroblastoma, the cancer that we will be raising money for. I care to support Golisano Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Oncology Group because so many children in our area and community are affected my childhood cancer and they deserve the care and research for a chance to live. Neuroblastoma has hit our schools community very hard this year with the passing of a staff member’s son. No parent should have to grief the loss of their child, and in order to stop this, money needs to be raised to aid research and continue the fight to find a cure for Neuroblastoma and other childhood cancers and sicknesses.

The Children’s Defense fund or (CDF) is a non- profit advocacy organization that was created in 1973 by Marian Wright Edelman. The purpose is to protect all children. They work with lawmakers, individuals, and policy workers. They want to promote successful programs that helps children from abuse, neglect, to have healthcare, good education, and uplift them from poverty. They try to help them succeed with the help of caring adults and communities. They are supported by foundation and corporate grants, and individual donations. They don’t accept government funds. The Dodd Miller act is the principal policy for CDF, in which no child gets left behind. They want to be the voice for those American children that can’t vote, lobby, or speak for themselves. They crated the Black Crusade for Children (BCCC) in 1995. This helps children with reading, and tries to get them excited about learning. They also have a Beat the odds scholarship that provides students each year with partial scholarships. I am definitely for this organization. They help many of children each year and not for money or credit. They are trying to take each child out of poverty, give each of them healthcare, provide affordable housing, end hunger, tax credits, promote learning, ensure graduation, and give away scholarships. I can honestly say that this organization that has a positive effect on many American children each year.

Most shelters are kill shelters in which pets that are not adopted soon or are violent are euthanized. What makes Best friends animal society unique is their belief in a no kill shelter, and an opportunity for every animal. Since 1984 they have provided care for abandoned and abused animals. Their mission is to promote, spaying and neutering to decrease the unnecessary pet overpopulation. They also want people to give shelter pets a chance before buying from a pet store, since some of these pets come from mills. Animal welfare is really important to me and I am passionate about it. By taking necessary actions as an animal owner I can decrease the chance of it ending in a shelter. I volunteer in a kill shelter and get told that they have no other way of controlling the over population of the pets so sometimes they put the really old or violent pets to sleep. By highlighting this organization they bring insight to what really happens in most kill shelters. Hopefully people will take initiative and make their mission of “no more homeless pets” come true. The organization is nonprofit and houses pets that wouldn’t have had a chance in another shelter.

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee’s was founded in 1995. Their mission is to save and keep as many endangered elephants alive and multiplying. They provide a safe healthy home for these beautiful animals. They make the environment for the elephants comfortable just like how it would be in their natural habitat. Due to the fact that some of them are endangered they have too. Also at this organization they educate people on the different species of the elephants at this “sanctuary “. The great thing about this organization is that they actually go and find these animals to help them. The reason I picked this organization is because of my mom. She loves elephants, always has and always will. She says that her reason are because they have a sense of being calm and they always protect their children regardless of any situation .

In 1913 Sanger was a nurse in New York who worked with poor women who were suffering from frequent childbirth as well as self-induced abortions. Sanger began searching for something to help these women.
In 1922 Margaret Sanger was the founder and president of Planned Parenthood. She was a Sex educator, nurse, and birth control activist. Sanger was the one that came up with birth control. In 1921, Sanger founded the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood Federation of America in New York. She also set up a clinic in Harlem With all African American Staff.
I believe that supporting Planned Parenthood is a good cause just because of the simple fact that there are many youth that are getting pregnant as well as ending up having a sexually transmitted disease. Some may not know where to turn or what to do in these types of situations. Some may not have anyone to turn to at all. These are life changing experiences. So what’s better than having a clinic like Planned Parenthood around to guide people through these situations? It’s there to help people make the right choice as well as making sure everyone has the free will to stay protected.

St. Jude was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas, with help from Dr. Lemuel Diggs, on the premise that "no child should die in the dawn of life".] In 1957, Thomas founded the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC), which helped him realize his dream. ALSAC is also the fundraising organization of St. Jude. Since St. Jude opened its doors in 1962, ALSAC has had the responsibility of raising the necessary funds to keep the hospital open. Memphis was chosen at the suggestion of Samuel Stritch, a Tennessee native who had been a spiritual advisor to Thomas since he presided at Thomas's confirmation in Thomas's boyhood home of Toledo, Ohio.
Although it was named after Thomas's patron saint, St. Jude is not a Catholic hospital and not affiliated with any religious organization.
In late 2007, the Chili's Care Center opened on the St. Jude campus. Chili's restaurant chain has pledged to provide $50 million to fund the construction of the center. The seven-story Chili's Care Center will house 340,000 square feet (32,000 m2) and will add 24 labs and 16 beds to the campus. It will house the department of radiological services, The Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium, two floors of outpatient clinics, one floor of inpatient clinics and rooms, two floors of laboratory space, an office floor and an unfinished level for future expansion.
In June 2008, Sterling Jewelers Inc. and St. Jude officially opened the new Kay Kafe, featuring a spacious lounge area, a significantly larger dining area and a variety of new dining options. More than ever, the cafeteria is the focal point of the campus where families and staff can escape and relax away from the treatment areas.
In 2010 St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was named the number one children's cancer hospital in U.S by U.S. News & World Report

  15. Now going by the name Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (NARSAD), Is a Foundation that helps provide grants and scientist for research on finding cures and unraveling secrets on Schizophrenia Bi-polar disorder, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorders like obsessive-compulsive and post-traumatic stress disorders and Depression. Researching for adults and children Starting out, the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation began as a family movement in 1981 and has become the world’s leading private funder of mental health research. The first NARSAD Grants were awarded in 1987. Only being around for 25 short years NARSAD has evolved from just helping the lives of people who suffered from a illness to helping their families cope and live a regular life with the illness. Only objectives are the donations that come in and where they come from. The government donates heartily and some critics and people don’t absolutely agree with the government’s huge involvement in NARSAD. I personally care about this topic simply because I’m human. If there is any way that people with any disability can be helped to make their life and family life more convenient then I’m for it all the way. Also I personally know how life is with dealing with a family member suffering from a mental illness (PTSD).

“Our mission is to bring about a time when there are no more homeless pets,” said Best Friends Animal Society. Best Friends Animal Society is about animals that are homeless or been abandoned or neglected in to this facility to get taken care of to get put into good homes and to reduce the number of unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter programs. In the late 1980s, when Best Friends was in its early days, roughly 17 million dogs and cats were being killed in shelters every year. Best Friends Animal Society is an organization to help all the animals that are being killed in these shelters. Best Friends has led some of the largest animal rescue efforts. These rescues include natural disasters, wartime situations, and animal hoarding or failed shelter situations where hundreds of dogs and cats need urgent and continuing care for many months before they can be placed in good new homes. Best Friends Animal Society is guided by a simple philosophy: kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. The work of Best Friends is supported entirely by the donations of our members. I care to support this organization because I love animals. Ever since I was little I have always had an animal and I really care for them. To see these animals suffer is really sad that’s why I have decided to support this organization.

In 1994, John Salvi entered a Brookline, Massachusetts Planned Parenthood clinic and opened fire killing 1 person and wounding 3 others. Planned Parenthood is very important today for Women and teenagers in the U.S

Best Friends Animal Society is an organization that shelters dogs, cats, and other animals, and it also is an adoption center. The organization is guided by a simple philosophy which is kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. The Best Friends Animal Society organization was organized in the late 1980’s and in that time period roughly 17 million dogs and cats were being killed in shelters every year. The organization also as a campaign called Best Friends No More Homeless Pets Campaign, which created a new vision: a grassroots effort to place dogs and cats who were considered unadoptable into good homes, and to reduce the number of unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter programs. Since the organization has been running the number of dogs and cats being destroyed in shelters has dropped to five million a year. The organization works with other members, other human groups, other individuals, and entire communities to set up spay and neuter, shelters, foster homes, and adoption programs in neighborhoods, cities, and states all over the country. The Best Friends Animal Society sanctuary is at Angel Canyon, at the heart of the Golden Circle of national parks in southern Utah, which is a home to about 2,000 dogs and cats and other animals. This is an organization that I support because I love animals and I think that all animals should have a home. It isn’t right for animals not to have a home and it’s cruel to just leave an animal without a home. The organization is a place that takes in the animals that don’t have homes and they take care of them which is a good thing when their owners weren’t doing it.

During the early years of Animal Welfare Institute, also known as (AWI,) this organization focused primarily on animals who were used in experimentations. They've worked hard to help improve the lives of animals in laboratories as well as well as preventing the selling of cats and dogs by random sources. The animal welfare Institute also works to protect existing laws and has adopted laws such as the Animal Welfare Act, Endangered Species Act, Humane Slaughter Act and Marine Mammal protection Act. The objectives of Animal Welfare Institute strive to make humane interference with animals and environment as minimal as possible. I care to support this organization for its efforts in combating a variety of issues that affect both animals and wildlife. Animals are a part of our ecosystem and should be treated with fairness. Any organization that devotes itself to protecting the environment that we live in as well as keeping the balance of nature is an organization worth supporting.

Keep America Beautiful keeping that each of us holds an obligation to preserve and protect our environment. Through our everyday choices and actions, we collectively have a huge impact on our world. It's really a simple concept, but one with far reaching effects. Keep America Beautiful follows a practical approach that unites citizens, businesses and government to find solutions that advance our core issues of preventing litter, reducing waste, and beautifying communities. The diverse American landscape consists of many different "community environments," each with their own interconnected needs and challenges. With a national network of more than 1,200 local affiliates and participating organizations, we combine education with hands-on stewardship to address the needs of communities on an intensely local and effective level. “We were put on this Earth to use this Earth not abuse this Earth” that’s my logo 

The Animal Welfare Institute or AWI was founded by Christine Stevens in 1951 was created to help usher in an age where the cruel treatment of animals was no longer present. To stop the inflicting of pain and dread on animals was their number one goal. When the organization began they put the abolishment of using animals for experimentation as their focal point, and as their following increased and their facilities expanded they were able to branch out into other areas of animal suffering. Today the biggest threat facing animals worldwide is factory farms the raising, fattening, and slaughtering for mass consumption of animals. They promote small, humane farms that follow their organizations guidelines and encourage the use non-animal testing methods. The founder Stevens also known as “Mother of the Animal Protection Movement” formed another partner organization with AWI in 1955 The Society for Animal Protective Legislation this became the first group in the U.S to specifically lobby on behalf of animals. For 57 years these two organizations have works together for animal rights and freedoms leading to the successful implementation of well over 15 federal laws in favor of animals, such as the Animal Welfare Act: All animal dealers must be registered and licensed, The Endangered Species Act: protects critically imperiled species of animals, and the Humane Slaughter Act: All slaughtering facilities are subject to inspection at any given time.

A man named Henry Bergh started the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, otherwise known as ASPCA. A son of a shipbuilder, he was born in 1813. He was generally a man of leisure, an aristocrat, and was even appointed to a diplomatic post to the Russian court Czar Alexander II in 1863. It was in that position he first took action against man's inhumanity toward animals. With his flair for drama he convinced politicians and committees of his purpose, and the charter incorporating the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was passed on April 10, 1866. The purpose of the ASPCA is to prevent people from doing harm to their pets and other animals. Such harm would include both physical and mental abuse such as kicking, hitting, spitting on, neglecting and even sexually assaulting any animal. I care about this organization because it is wicked to harm animals, especially when they can’t rightfully defend themselves. It is a moral issue if anything, if you have the indecency to harm something that innocent than you will grow to become a cruel human being. You start with animals but then what when you get bored with that? It only gets worse from here. I fully support what the ASPCA is and stands for.

  24. By definition, leprosy--"Left untreated, leprosy can be progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Limbs can become numb or diseased as a result of secondary infections; these occur as a result of the body's defenses being compromised by the primary disease. Secondary infections, in turn, can result in tissue loss causing fingers and toes to become shortened and deformed, as cartilage is absorbed into the body. My organization ALM covers costs of treating leprosy in countries in Africa, Asia, and South America that have the highest rates for the disease. ALM also funds reconstructive, cosmetic, and other surgical procedures to alleviate the damage from leprosy to the body, provides physical therapy rehabilitation programs, and offers patients help in starting businesses and learning job skills, supplying vocational training in areas such as carpentry or sewing." We chose the American Leprosy Mission, because leprosy in itself is interesting by nature. Anything that could be as destructive as leprosy needs to be researched. Also there is no definitive reason for how people get it. People need to learn about ALM, so other people in other countries may have a chance to beat it.

The organization I'm choosing to support is the 'Boys & Girls Club of America'. This club is a national organization that enables all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Holding it's headquarters in Atlanta, the BGCA is tax exempt and partially funded by the federal government. Originally named the Boys club & founded in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut it was later changed to the Boys & Girls Club of America in 1990. I chose this organization because I believe it's purpose serves greatly to the support everyone at it's best. This organization helps kids grow and learn a responsible way of life down the right path in a safe place and I believe this is what we need more now and days for our communities to help bring them together across the world. This club gives opportunities back to our community and it's people to help ensure a better future for our growing kids and I believe this is a great and nice thing to be looked upon.

Compared to the organizations that others have chosen, ArtPeace is more or less a newborn. ArtPeace was founded in 2000 by Kristin A. Rapp, a social worker and therapist experienced in working with the arts, in our own hometown of Rochester. Although initially small time, the organization blossomed in 2003, eventually gaining a strong central support group in 2005.

The main objective of ArtPeace is to aid in improving, as well as encouraging, the growth of young adults into individuals who are ready for the world beyond the school doors. Based on the premise of “Everyone is innately creative and that expression is the opposite of depression”, ArtPeace seeks to encourage the creativity of students from all ends of society to pursue new and creative ways of thinking, which has become a necessary asset to have in the modern corporate world. Although many of the students they reach out to all lead different lifestyles, the organization seeks to unite them together to make a better future for each and every one of them.

Overall, I have to say out of all the organizations that were on the list I agree with this one the most. Maybe it is because of the influence of daily exposure to the arts, but in any case, I do believe in ArtPeace’s message and successful attempts at unifying people who would normally not pay much attention to each other, and bringing them together to create something fantastic for everyone in the community.

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is a non-profit organization whose goal is to “provide education about the crisis facing social, sensitive, passionately intense, playful, complex, exceedingly intelligent, and endangered creatures.” Their other goal is to “provide a haven for old, sick, or needy elephants in a setting of green pastures, dense forests, spring-fed ponds, and heated barns for cold winter nights.”

The sanctuary was founded in 1995, and is located across 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tennessee. The sanctuary only houses female elephants. However, in November 2009, only one male elephant was a resident. He passed away in May 2010. The very first elephant is Tarra, who was the sanctuary’s very first resident. In2003, a stray dog, Bella wandered onto the ranch and befriended Tarra. They were inseparable until Bella’s passing October 26, 2011.

The elephant’s species on the ranch include Asian and African elephants. There are also quarantined elephants that are sick on the ranch. Currently, there are fourteen elephants on the sanctuary grounds.

The sanctuary is not open to the public. But everyday, donations are sent to the sanctuary in order to expand and protect the sanctuary. These elephants are survivors of abuse, neglect, circus acts gone wrong, and are the escapees from hunters.

The Elephant sanctuary is a non-profit organization created to care for and meet the needs for endangered species of elephants. They also provide education about the crisis of these endangered creatures. They also care for elephants that have “retired” from zoos and circus acts. It is the largest natural habitat refuge for endangered elephants and is not open to the public and the elephants are encouraged to live as they would naturally not to be viewed by an audience. The sanctuary opened in 1995 with only one elephant and over the years has had and lost several elephants and currently cares for 14 elephants. They care for both Asian and African elephants. I think this organization is important because they are attempting to save a species from going extinct and educating others to the fact that there are ways to protect these animals from extinction.

ASPCA has been opened for 145 years and a philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh founded it On April 10, 1866 in New York City. ASPCA stands for The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and it was made to stop and prevent any harm to animals from owners either abusing or abandoning them. This is also a place where they take donations so they can take care of the animals that come in the animal shelter and you probably saw some of their commercials. They also take animals that live on the streets and they take care of them and they let people adopt the animals so the animals could have a better life and a good home. I support this organization because I love animals and it hurts me to see an animal mistreated and abused and even abandoned. I feel if you know that your not going to care about the animal then you shouldn’t have a pet because animals also have feelings and they need love just like animals. Considering I have a pet at home I hate to see any animal in pain and I hate to see animals missing body parts because they been in many fights and if they were in a home they would ever go through that pain. I’m supporting the ASPCA because I feel if I speak out on animal rights I can make a little difference.

  31. Founded by Juliette Gordon in 1912, the Girl Scouts of America is an organization for young girls to come to come together, learn new things and to grow as an individual. The program is made to empower girls, and to make them realize their potential. The organization began because Gordon wanted to give something to all the girls. she wanted them to have tasks to do and a second family to feel safe with just like the boys had. The original name for the organization was the Girl Guides of America and the name was changed in 1913. The small group grew fast within months and the girls would hike, play basketball, and do so many other fun activities. During WW2 when girls were kept in camps with their families they began to form small girl scouts groups and these groups continued until the girls were released from the camps, showing how great the bond is. I support this organization because I believe that it’s amazing for a girl to have a lot of support when she is young so she can grow up to be a great woman. The girl scouts do a lot of things to help out the girls that join and some girls might not have the greatest parents but they find love in the girls scouts with their mentors and new best friends.

American Leprosy Mission is a Christian organization founded in 1906 that is also non-profited. Their aim is to work to cure and care for people who have leprosy. Leprosy is also known as ‘Hansen’s disease’, which was named after a physician Gerhard Armeur Hansen. I found out an interesting fact, every two minutes someone is diagnosed with leprosy. Leprosy is caused by a germ or bacteria called mycobacterium leprae. It causes an affection that affects the skin and destroys nerves; it also destroys the body’s ability to feel pain and injury. The bacteria is transmitted through coughing and sneezing. Leprosy can be however be treated with multi-drug therapy. I was pleased with this news because not every disease is curable. I was intrigued with learning more about leprosy because the first time I heard about this disease was in a biblical sense. After doing research however, I realized that the leprosy mentioned in the bible is not the same form of leprosy today. According to ALM the Hebrew word for leprosy refers to many types of skin diseases. Whether it’s referring to the leprosy from the bible or the leprosy of today’s time—people are still shunned from their communities when they are know to have it. ALM provides surgical intervention for disabilities, training of health workers, research, public information and physical, or vocational rehabilitation assistance. They strive to minister hope and restoration for those suffering with the disease. This is why I am interested in this organization, because of the idea that they are giving hope for those who have lost all of it.

  34. My organization, American Leprosy Missions, advocates for the prevention and awareness of the chronic disease leprosy. Leprosy comes in two common forms tuberculoid and lepromatous which both derive from a bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. Those at the highest risk are those living in endemic areas with poor conditions such as inadequate bedding, contaminated water, and insufficient diet, or other diseases that compromise immune function. Leprosy has affected humanity for over 4,000 years, and was well-recognized in the civilizations of ancient China, Egypt, and India. In 1995, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that between 2 and 3 million people were permanently disabled because of leprosy at that time. In the past 20 years, 15 million people worldwide have been cured of leprosy. It is the purpose of AML to help those everywhere that struggles with this disease. The common symptoms are skin lesions, which are lighter than one’s skin color, muscle weakness, numbness or lack of feeling in the hands, arms, feet, and legs. Prevention treatment for this disease consists of many antibiotics that will stop the mass reproduction of the bacteria cells in one’s body. The AML will distribute medicines such as asprin, prednisone, or thalidomide that are used to control inflammation to those in need.

  35. Stardate, 1965. An environmental group, the Sierra Club, has launched a campaign to protect Mineral King Valley. The Walt Disney company envisions a vast ski resort in this desolate, alpine area. The Sierra Club starts attempting to stop the preject in its tracks via politics.

Stardate, 1972. Location: Supreme Court, United States of America, Earth. The Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund is in court. They are attempting to keep Mineral King Valley undeveloped. Their desparate attempts will ultimately go unfruitful, however; the court case will be technically lost. However, after so many court cases, Walt Disney Co. finally will pull out; they don't want to seem like a big, bad, anti-environment corporation, after all. What would all the Bambi fans think?

Stardate, 1997. The Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund changes its name to the boot-quivering EarthJustice. They want to show they were not just advocates for the Sierra Club, but for the environment itself. They will use the law to help conserve the planet. They will provide legal representation for the Earth, and for anyone wishing to preserve the Earth. Over the next decade and a half, they will average 40 successful court cases per year. After all, as their slogan reads: "The Earth needs a good lawyer." EarthJustice will provide just that service.

The organization that my group and I are doing is called RAINN. RAINN is called the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network. RAINN's focus is on people who have been sexually abused. This organization was founded by Scott Berkowitz in the year 1994 with very generous contributions from Atlantic Records, Warner Music Group, and Time Warner. The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network are one of the largest anti-sexual violence organizations in the nation. Within this organization, RAINN has created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline which has partnered with more than 1,000 local rape treatment hotlines. In the year 2007, they upgraded they services to an online hotline so whenever victims need help, they can instantly talk to someone and it is as intuitive as instant messaging. RAINN has been the go to resourse for television ads, radio and print news outlets. The reason why I stand behind this organization because they help rape and incest victims and they also help get the perverts who do these inhuman acts the justice that they deserve.

  37. Amnesty International is a non-profit organization, devoted to defending human rights. Amnesty International fights for issues like, defending the freedom of expression
protecting women’s rights, abolishing the death penalty, demanding justice for crimes against humanity, and demanding corporate accountability where companies have abused people’s rights. Working globally, locally, and nationally, Amnesty International believes that with united forces, we can mobilize public pressure and demonstrate international solidarity to create positive change. Through letter-writing, online and offline campaigning, demonstrations, vigils and direct lobbying of those with power and influence, Amnesty’s members, supporters, and activists diligently strive for a better world.
Established in the 1960s, Amnesty International was started by one man’s outrage at what was wrong in the world and his courage to change it. Peter Benenson, was a British lawyer, who after hearing about two Portuguese students arrested for raising a toast to freedom, published the article “The Forgotten Prisoners” in the Observer Newspaper. From there, the article launched into a worldwide campaign, “Appeal for Amnesty 1961.” Peter’s call to action, spread throughout the world, after his article was reprinted in newspapers internationally. With one man’s initial stand up for what was right, Amnesty International was born.
I support Amnesty International, because too often in the United States we forget how lucky we are. Organizations like Amnesty International, remind us that there are millions of people out there in the world struggling to live, let alone get by. Amnesty’s goals are simple and straightforward, but hard to execute. I support Amnesty International because it fights for the seemingly impossible issues to solve, to improve the lives of everyone one step at a time.

  38. The American Forests Association, founded in 1875, is the oldest national non-profit conservation organization in the United States. Since its birth, this association has kept true to the morals which John Aston Warder had in mind as he became the first leader of the organization. These ideas consisted of two main ideas: Conservation and Restoration. The organization has focused on things like restoring and conserving the enormous centuries-old redwood forests. During a time when the country was expanding like never before, there needed to be something in order to ensure the nations forests survived. As cities rapidly grew, forests were being clear-cut in order to make room for buildings, houses, and factories that were polluting natural ecosystems. Farming and lumber needs also caused forests to be cut down in vast numbers across the US. Today, there are forests all over the world that are protected by American Forests. They plant millions of trees every year, which contribute to the betterment of the ecosystem and everything in it. I take an interest in American Forests not only because I believe that what they do is important, but I have a family connection to this organization. My grandfather and his brother, along with their father, uncle (etc.) were forest rangers, mostly in the Adirondack Mountains. I look forward to learning more about what it is this organization does, and how the motives and actions have changed since the days of my relatives' service.

This program is designed to help the mentally ill people by awarding grants that will hopefullymake a breakthrough with research. NARSAD is a non profit organization and the largest donor that supports research on brain and behavior disorders. I chose this organization because it looked intresting and stood out the most from the others that we had to pick from. Schizophrenia is a serious matter and often times it is tooken as a joke. I just wanted to show that its way more serious then what people think.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also known as ASPCA is a organization with a strict mission of making our world a better place for the animals. The organization was created to stop and prevent any form of animal cruelty to animals. A man named Henry Bergh in 1866 originally founded this Organization! Every year 100 million animals are killed through testing and every year 3 to 4 million cats and dogs (healthy and adoptable) are euthanized. The ASPCA strives to be the voice of the animals. This organization is an important part of my life because animals deserve better treatment. My heart has always been for the animals and I strive in any or every way to better the lives for them. My ultimate goal is to raise awareness and knowledge that animal cruelty is real. The ASPCA is known “As the first humane organization to be granted legal authority to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals, we are wholly dedicated to fulfilling the ASPCA mission through nonviolent approaches.”
